#4 black cotton tie line is often called “trick line”. Not many people know where that nickname comes from.
This handy braided cord has a matte black finish which all but disappears when placed in front of black stage curtains, the most common color for drapes in the theatre.
This ability to merge into the background gave magicians to ability to make things appear like they were suspended in thin air, since the line holding the suspended item could not be seen by the audience.
If you want to use tie line for tricks, make sure you use the unglazed version. The glazing on glazed tie line is shiny, making it more visible since it reflects light.
